    IDEA ASSESSMENT VIA ENTERPRISE CROWDFUNDING: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF DECISION-MAKING STYLES

    Deciding which ideas to pursu is an essential step in innovation management. Organizations increasingly open up their decision-making processes internally and externally by harnessing the collective intelligence of crowds. One mechanism for doing so is enterprise crowdfunding, i.e. inviting employees to propose and support ideas on a crowdfunding platform inside the enterprise. In this paper, we empirically analyze such an enterprise crowdfunding endeavor where hundreds of employees endowed with the discretion to spend company budget proposed dozens of ideas and decided to fund 10 of them. Based on log files and information on the employees´ roles in their enterprise, we investigate the time course of individual decision-making “ i.e., whether they decide rather quickly or more time-lagged which ideas to support Factors that influnce decision-making style include characteristics of proposers, supporters, ideas, supporters´ activity level, and the progress of the trial. From this, we derive suggestions for future research into crowdfunding, and we propose relevant design parameters for using crowdfunding as a tool for internal openness and Enterprise 2.0

    In-Situ Measurement of Fresh Produce Respiration Using a Modular Sensor-Based System

    In situ, continuous and real-time monitoring of respiration (R) and respiratory quotient (RQ) are crucial for identifying the optimal conditions for the long-term storage of fresh produce. This study reports the application of a gas sensor (RMS88) and a modular respirometer for in situ real-time monitoring of gas concentrations and respiration rates of strawberries during storage in a lab-scale controlled atmosphere chamber (190 L) and of Pinova apples in a commercial storage facility (170 t). The RMS88 consisted of wireless O2 (0% to 25%) and CO2 sensors (0% to 0.5% and 0% to 5%). The modular respirometer (3.3 L for strawberries and 7.4 L for apples) consisted of a leak-proof arrangement with a water-containing base plate and a glass jar on top. Gas concentrations were continuously recorded by the RMS88 at regular intervals of 1 min for strawberries and 5 min for apples and, in real-time, transferred to a terminal program to calculate respiration rates ( RO2 and RCO2 ) and RQ. Respiration measurement was done in cycles of flushing and measurement period. A respiration measurement cycle with a measurement period of 2 h up to 3 h was shown to be useful for strawberries under air at 10 °C. The start of anaerobic respiration of strawberries due to low O2 concentration (1%) could be recorded in real-time. RO2 and RCO2 of Pinova apples were recorded every 5 min during storage and mean values of 1.6 and 2.7 mL kg−1 h−1, respectively, were obtained when controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions (2% O2, 1.3% CO2 and 2 °C) were established. The modular respirometer was found to be useful for in situ real-time monitoring of respiration rate during storage of fresh produce and offers great potential to be incorporated into RQ-based dynamic CA storage system

    Increasing engagement through early recommender intervention

    Social network sites rely on the contributions of their members to create a lively and enjoyable space. Recent research has focused on using personalization and recommender technologies to encourage participation of existing members. In this work we present an early-intervention approach to encouraging participation and engagement, which makes recommendations to new users during their sign-up process. Our recommender system exploits external social media to produce people and profile entry recommendations for new users. We present results of a live user study, showing that users who received recommendations at sign-up created more social connections, contributed more content, and were on the whole more engaged with the system, contributing more without prompt and returning more often. We further show that recommendations for multiple content types yield significantly better results, in terms of user contribution and consumption; and that recommendations of more active users yield a higher return rate

    Filaments in observed and mock galaxy catalogues

    Context. The main feature of the spatial large-scale galaxy distribution is an intricate network of galaxy filaments. Although many attempts have been made to quantify this network, there is no unique and satisfactory recipe for that yet. Aims. The present paper compares the filaments in the real data and in the numerical models, to see if our best models reproduce statistically the filamentary network of galaxies. Methods. We apply an object point process with interactions (the Bisous process) to trace and describe the filamentary network both in the observed samples (the 2dFGRS catalogue) and in the numerical models that have been prepared to mimic the data.We compare the networks. Results. We find that the properties of filaments in numerical models (mock samples) have a large variance. A few mock samples display filaments that resemble the observed filaments, but usually the model filaments are much shorter and do not form an extended network. Conclusions. We conclude that although we can build numerical models that are similar to observations in many respects, they may fail yet to explain the filamentary structure seen in the data.
